A while back, I did career coaching with a young woman who just finished her college degree in sociology. Her parents were appalled because they believed she would not be able to get a job with that type of degree.
When we searched on LinkedIn for jobs in the San Francisco area with the word “sociology,” we discovered 411 job listings! The employers wanted degrees in people-focused majors.
We found a “Product Designer” job at Apple, and a “Director of Parks and Recreation” at a city. Both jobs were paying salaries of more than $150,000. We found “Communications Officer” for Blue Shield of California and “Director of Public Safety” at a local college.
While none of these jobs used the word “sociology” in the description, the word was included in the preferred education for applicants. With this information, she could finally show her parents examples where her sociology degree was valued!
Are you unclear what to do now that you have finished your college degree? Well, that is the exact type of coaching I do. There is NO CHARGE for a consultation. Let’s help you get clarity on what steps you can take towards a great career.
