Has anyone ever asked you about something you did at work, and you answered:
I WAS JUST DOING MY JOB

A client who was a CPA came to me to revise her resume. The first page said:
FOUND $1 MILLION OF UNBILLED AND COLLECTED $600 THOUSAND.
How did she find the missing $1 million?
I WAS DOING MY JOB.
I asked again. How did she find the problem?
I WAS JUST DOING MY JOB.

She couldn’t give me more details.
“Company A” acquired “Company B”. The “Company A” salespeople did not know they were supposed to bill “Company B.” The lawyers forgot to tell them.
But how did she figure it out?
I KNOW HOW TO READ THE FINE PRINT IN CONTRACTS.
She received training about how to read contracts at the beginning of her career. She had reviewed so many that it really was just part of her job.
We did some interview coaching so she finally could say:
I CAN EXPLAIN WHAT I ACTUALLY DID TO FIND THE MISSING $1 MILLION. IT WAS JUST PART OF MY JOB.
If you can benefit from some interview coaching like this, schedule a call in my calendar. There is no charge for it.
